Mungermen was inspired by a group of likeminded local artists wishing to live a sustainable life doing what they love. Living close to the ocean, surfing hidden spots and exploring wild landscapes, Sam Loney expresses his experiences with the natural environment through drawing. Following a Fine Arts Degree, Sam became interested in using silk screen to transpose his designs from drawings to textile design.
The dream of Mungermen became a reality for Sam when he opened a stall at Salamanca Markets in 1998. This dream was further realised with the opening of his first shop here in the Salamanca Arts Centre in 2006.
More than just a brand...
Mungermen is more than just a brand, it is a way of life. Sam, his partner Allison and their children Sonny and Coco live in Bream Creek in the south-east corner of Tasmania. Their lives uphold the philosophy behind Mungermen; enjoying a lifestyle blessed by sun, surf, sand and bush.
Inspired by their love of the environment, they create beautiful designs – which are the mark of Mungermen - and translate them onto a variety of quality textile products for others to enjoy.
‘Island-made or fair trade’
Working from their home studio in Bream Creek, all the designs are hand drawn and then, using silkscreen printing, they are transformed onto fabric. An age old art, the silkscreen process is done by hand, making each piece unique. For every colour used in the designs, a separate screen is required. For example, the rock lobster apron is created using four separate silkscreens. Wherever possible, Mungermen products and home wears, such as the aprons, bags and navy tea towels, are sewn here in Tasmania. The t-shirts are all Australian-made and carry the ‘no-sweat’ trade label.
